Hartley Map

Hartley is a suburban district on the eastern fringe of Plymouth, separated from the city centre by several miles of residential streets and green spaces. The neighbourhood sits between the expanding urban sprawl to the west and quieter countryside beyond its eastern boundary. Like many outlying Plymouth suburbs, Hartley has grown steadily as the city expanded outward, with most development occurring in the mid-to-late twentieth century. The area is primarily residential, characterised by terraced houses, semi-detached properties and family homes built to house workers commuting into Plymouth’s industrial and commercial zones.

For visitors and residents, Hartley offers the practical advantage of being close enough to reach Plymouth city centre by car or bus within twenty minutes, whilst maintaining a more spacious, suburban feel than inner-city neighbourhoods. The district serves as a gateway to the eastern approaches of Plymouth and connects to wider Devon through local roads that branch toward Tavistock and the moor. Trees and open land still define parts of the area, though the suburb continues to consolidate as housing demand drives further building. Hartley reflects Plymouth’s growth pattern as a sprawling port city that extends far beyond its medieval core into surrounding farmland and villages.
